What are the Geosciences?

Geoscience, also known as Geology or Earth Science, includes a variety of disciplines that study the history of the earth and the processes that have shaped it. Geoscientists believe that "the present is the key to the past", which means that we can understand historical events by studying the same processes operating in the present. Students of geology soon come to understand the incredible length of the geologic timescale and the importance of earth materials to human civilization.

Why study geoscience at Northland?

Northland College's environmental emphasis brings a special strength to its geoscience program. Students become aware of the interconnections between earth processes and the atmosphere, the oceans, and the world of biology. In a science where seeing "the big picture" is fundamental to success, Northland students are unusually well-prepared. Northland students learn about the influence of the geology of a region on its human population and the ways that population shapes the land. In the decades to come, environmental concerns will play a leading role in all fields of the geosciences.
