My work is always a response to my surroundings and for the past 6 years I’ve lived in rural Wisconsin where I spend hours walking through woods and by rivers and lakes noticing the endless landscape and the smallest wonder of a seed or pebble. I understand the connection of the grand and the minute while immersed in the calm and safety of the tangled wilderness.

I want there to be a strong evidence of human involvement in the making of these images. One of the strongest elements I use to meet this end is line – the purest form of drawing. The process of making these drawings and prints is an intuitive meditation on personal, social and spiritual relationships with nature and landscape. A couple of the formal elements I relate to the landscape are the tangle of lines that make up the growth of the woods and the shifting spatial relationships that come with traveling through dense woods. The results are images that are reminiscent of trees, rocks, roots, seeds, and seedpods in their form and texture.

I don’t have a preconceived image when I start drawing–only a thought or feeling which may change as the drawing progresses. Many of these have been partially or wholly erased and usually end up in a different orientation than when they began. Growth, regeneration, movement and change are some of the words and I hold close to me when working on these poetic responses to the natural world. The process of my own intuition and instinct becomes my true subject matter at times.

Through this investigation I’ve become more conscious of environmental concerns both personal and global. Because of this I do my utmost to use the most gentle printmaking processes available.
